Segway Closes Shop Less than 20 Years After The Greatest Marketing Tease Ever
In 2000, we were all promised that the world of transportation was about to change in a way we could have never predicted. Inventor Dean Kamen ran one of the greatest marketing tease campaigns ever. For months people predicted a hydrogen driven car or even a true hover board for the market. Then he revealed a two-wheeled scooter like device with a gyroscope. The Segway immediately faced legislative regulation from local municipalities and faced an uphill battle. After about a year or two, the Segway became noticeably uncool. Relegated to tourist groups wearing fanny packs and Hawaiian shirts and of course Paul Bart the mall cop, the Segway was deemed a flop.
